Banner Group

A Banner is a living picture which helps us to focus on God and helps us to develop our relationship with Him.

Working in a group is a natural way to worship together and through choosing text, understanding it and trying to use it in a banner, we grow in our faith. It doesn’t matter where you are in your journey of faith or bible knowledge or even in your creative ability, you can still take part.

The Banner Group in Kirkton was initially formed to make banners for our own church, but we became aware of the importance of using our skills to make banners and church furnishing for others. We have made banners for Victoria Park School and the Rainbow Nursery there and were able to send a banner to one of our church partnerships in Kenya.

In summer 2009 we were asked to produce a banner to commemorate the visit from members of Donkgwang Church, Seoul, South Korea in September that year. We tried to come up with a design that would be a reminder for our visitors of their links with Scotland and Kirkton Church.

The final design, in water colour, mirrored the shapes in our own Communion Banner using colours associated with our Scottish landscape, with the Cross, the Universal symbol of Christianity as the focal point. The chosen method of working was Foundation Piecing, giving clean lines which helped to enhance the perspective towards the cross. The thistle worked in free machine embroidery and applied in the foreground.

Although we deliberated over a choice of wording in the end we felt the banner spoke for itself and allowed for individual interpretation and meditation.
